The above details reveals that 98.58% of State Highways are asphalt surface roads and similarly 97.88 % of Major District Roads are having asphalt surface. 94.11% of Ordinary District Roads and 92.88% of Village Roads are having asphalt surface.

The average Road length per one lac population is 187.30 km. and average Road length per 100 Sq. Km. is 57.43 km. in Gujarat State.

Village Connectivity :

The state has 17843 villages. 17739 villages are connected with "pucca" roads, having 99.42 % of connectivity bypucca roads. Out of these 17739 villages, 17680 villages are connected with asphalt surface Road, where as 59 villages are connected with WBM surface road.

The Transport Sector play a crucial role in the development of an economy and social development. Considering its importance state has formulated ROAD POLICY detailed below in brief.

Objectives :

  • To provide connectivity to all villages by all-weather roads, and thus further improve quality of life in rural areas, in terms of quick access to health services, better education, social service etc.
  • To provide an adequate and efficient Road system encompassing all transportation needs so as to ensure smooth and uninterrupted flow of goods and passengers traffic both within the State as well as on interstate routes.
  • To constantly upgrade technology by indicating superior and quicker construction and maintenance methods with a view to reduce the life cycle cost of roads.
  • To induct more scientific principles of resources allocation for maintenance and new construction programmers.
  • Overall , to set high standards of Road safety and travel comfort.

To Achieve :

  • Removing the deficiencies in the existing Road length by optimal combination of widening and strengthening of selected stretches / corridors.
  • Providing new links particularly in areas of concentrated industrial growth and to speed up the movements of agricultural and dairy products.
  • Providing missing bridges and cross drainage works.
  • Connecting the remaining villages by all weather roads.
  • Replacing existing level crossings by Road over bridges.
  • Improvement of Road geometrics and safety provisions.
  • Removing regional imbalances in the Road network.
